Episode 154 - DC Doomsday

Julian Meush August 14, 2020

A lot can happen in 2 weeks. Julian, and Jeremy, are reunited with Dan after a couple weeks away, and boy howdy is there a lot to discuss. After the obligatory Tenet check-in, the guys dive deep into the layoffs at Warner Brothers. Layoffs that hit particularly hard at DC. Not unexpectedly, the much maligned DC Universe streaming service appears to be getting the axe, however, it was the move to completely gut DC Collectibles and hobble DC Comics that came as the biggest shocker. This all comes only weeks ahead of DC Fan Dome, the comic book companies much hyped digital comic-con. Fortunately it wasn’t all bad news on the DC front as it was revealed that Rocksteady’s new game would revolve around the Suicide Squad as they hunt the Justice League (which is pretty cool if we’re being honest). After that the ToB Crew jumps over to the bleak future of the theatrical experience as news of Mulan coming to Disney+ became a reality (among other downer news bits on that front). Fortunately, some good news came out of the Emmy nomination as Watchmen was (rightfully) nominated for 26 awards. All that and so much more in this week’s (extra long) Tower of Babble Podcast!

Episode 153 - DC, Tron 3, TMNT, and AMC

Julian Meush July 8, 2020

It’s been almost a month since the ToB Crew conveeded, and in that time A LOT has happened. Making for a jumbo sized episode of The ToB Podcast! Starting with just DC, there’s news on The Snyder Cut, Michael Keaton’s Batman, Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, Henry Cavill’s Superman, two animated features, and the future of their streaming service. That’s without even mentioning the rest! The guys also dive deep into Tron 3, a reboot to Twister, the AMC Theatres saga, a new TMNT movie (and possible also a live action show?), the strangeness of Qubi, a Fallout show at Amazon Prime, and so much more (if you can believe it)! On a slightly more serious note, Julian, Dan, and Jeremy also examine the recent move of white voice actors stepping down from voicing non-white characters, as well as the deaths of Joel Schumacher and Ian Hom.

Episode 151 - The Snyder Cut Is Real

Julian Meush May 25, 2020

Some people thought it was a myth, others assumed it was only an eventuality, the rest just got bombarded with the hashtag for 2 years, but against all odds, the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League is real, and it’s coming to HBO Max. Julian, Jeremy, and Dan discuss the exciting news and debate over how to process it all while trying to considering it in context of the vocal minority that made it happen (not as easy to do as you might think). The guys also dive into the latest Tennent trailer and ponder if it’s the last best hope to save movie theatres in a post COVID world. Speaking of which, AMC vs Universal Pictures is also discussed before moving onto to some less depressing news from the galaxy far far away, with the announcement of Taika Waititi taking on a Star Wars feature film of his own. All that and so much more in the latest Tower of Babble Podcast!

Episode 150 - Why Dune?

Julian Meush April 22, 2020

After taking a short break from the regular show (lots of Star Wars: The Clone Wars content for you though!), the guys are back to discuss the latest in film and television news. It’s been a few weeks so there are a couple lingering stories to catch up on. Not the least of which being the new photos from the set of Dune and the cancellation of Comic-Con. There was also a fair bit of Disney related news. Some good, some bad. The good news, Disney+ has surpassed 50 million subscribers, the bad news, COVID19 is costing the company $30 million a day. Julian, Daniel, and Jeremy (via the internet) break all of that down, and much more, on this week’s Tower of Babble Podcast!

Episode 149 - Superman: Red Son

Julian Meush March 16, 2020

With much of the world in lock down due to the Corona Virus, it doesn’t hurt to turn to the world of entertainment for a little distraction. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has effected that as well. Julian and Jeremy discuss the delays resulting from the virus, including James Bond: No Time to Die, Mulan, and more. Afterwards, in an effort to lighten the mood, the guys discuss the latest in film and TV news, with The Last of Us announcement from HBO taking up much of the discussion. Finally, a review of the latest DC Animation adaptation concludes the show with a in depth look at Superman: Red Son. Stay healthy everyone, and stay tuned for more ToB Podcasts during these trying times!

Episode 148 - Pattinson's Batsuit

Julian Meush February 19, 2020

With awards season now firmly behind us, the ToB Crew can start concentrating in the things that REALLY matter again - things like the Batsuit! Matt Reeves released a brief (and very red) test footage clip of Robert Pattinson in the new Batsuit, so Julian, Jeremy, and Dan combed through each frame to pull out all the possible clues. Meanwhile, rumour has is that Sam Raimi is in talks to direct Dr. Strange 2, the new James Bond theme was released, the insane set technology used on The Mandalorian was revealed and much more! Plus the guys recap their picks from the Oscars!

Episode 146 - The 2019 Tobie Awards

Julian Meush December 25, 2019

Once again it is time for the annual Tobie Awards! Known for their prestige and import, the Tobies are a look back the year’s best in film and television. As is tradition, this years ceremony is hosed by Julian Meush, Daniel D’Souza, and Jeremy Kozier. The ToB Crew walk through each of their picks, laying out their justifications for their top 3 choices. 2019 was chalk full of amazing films and television programs, regardless of their appearance on anyone’s list, and is of course deserving of praise in their own right, but only the select few are lucky enough to take home a Tobie. Let the listing begin!

Episode 145 - DC Check-In

Julian Meush December 7, 2019

The ToB Crew is back with another regular episode of the ToB Podcast. A lot has happened, especially at Warner Brothers, so the guys decide to do a recap of all things DC. Variety is reporting that DC brass don’t know how to make Superman relevant to modern audiences, all while Henry Cavil drops some Superman nuggets, Michael B Jordan is pitching Superman ideas, and Ben Affleck is stoking the flames of #ReleaseTheSynderCut with a tweet. Needless to say there’s a lot to talk about. The guys also touch on the new “Sonic the Hedgehog” trailer, Mark Wahlberg’s casting in the “Uncharted” movie and much more!

Episode 144 - Green Lantern In My Loins

Julian Meush November 7, 2019

After recording a Watchmen ToB Breakdown the guys jumped into an impromptu, full episode, of the ToB Podcast. There was so much to cover, from “The Batman” news to the deluge of announcements that came along with the HBO Max content reveal, what was supposed to be a quick catch-up episode became a 2-hour deep dive Green Lantern, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, The Matrix and more. Luckily there’s lot of meat on the news bones for Julian, Jeremy and Dan to chew on.

Episode 143 - Arm-Fall-Off-Boy

Julian Meush October 18, 2019

Martin Scorsese’s comments would have been old news by the time the ToB Crew got around to recording the latest episode of the podcast, fortunately he decided to double down on those comments, making it a whole new story! Julian, Dan, and Jeremy try to dissect Scorsese’s thought process and try to put all the fallout into context. They also discuss the set photo leaks from Suicide Squad that reveal a crazy cast of characters, Damon Lindleoff suggesting that HBO’s Watchmen may only be one season, and the latest Picard trailer. All that, and much more, on this week’s Tower of Babble Podcast!

Bonus Episode - ToB Film Club - Surviving Christmas (2004)
Dec 24, 2025

Happy holidays ToB Fans! Completing a string of 3 straight publicly available Film Club episodes, commemorating the show's relaunch, we finish with our annual tradition of doing a Christmas movie for December. This year, with Matt joining the show it was his choice. He went with a movie from the mid-2000s that he's revisited time and again - 'Surviving Christmas'. A Ben Affleck vehicle that comes from a rocky era of his, just one year removed from 'Gili'. Fortunately, it features a strong supporting cast, with both Catherine O'Hara and the late James Gandolfini stealing the show and preventing this from being a complete disaster. Devoid of any type of strong holiday message, we spend much of the movie indulging Affleck's character's obnoxious desires, and despite some funny moments peppered throughout and a relatively strong third act, the tonal inconsistency and unlikability of the main character leave this movie mired in mediocrity. See you all again in 2026!

Episode 202 - Could Things Be Worse?
Dec 17, 2025

It is often said we're living through "unprecedented times", and I must admit that it rings true when reading the news. Normally, we're fortunate enough to be discussing the frivolous world of entertainment - shielding us from much of the dower nature of the the modern world. Unfortunately, that does not mean we are immune - this week proves there's still plenty of bad news in the entertainment world to go around. And while we try to focus on the fun stuff, sometimes the bad stuff threatens things we love, like creators, and movie theatres, and therefor must be called out. As such, Matt and Julian spend the front half of the show talking about the Netflix/WB deal, and the Disney's investment in AI. Pick your poison on that one. However, stick around, as things take a turn back to the fun as the latest in film and tv news is covered, including discussions about a new '28 Years Later' movie, a new 'Men in Black', 'Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair', and 'Stranger Things',. All this and so much more on this week's Tower of Babble Podcast!

Bonus Episode - Warner Bros. Sales Chaos - Daily DVR
Dec 11, 2025

Julian joins Axel and Andy on The Daily DVR Podcast to wring out all the angst surrounding the impeding sale of Warner Bros. and their myriad of assets, including HBO, to Netflix. With Paramount still sniffing around this is far from done but all of it is far from good for fans of movies and TV.

Bonus Episode - ToB Film Club - Dark City (1998)
Nov 28, 2025

The term often used to describe the 1998 Alex Proyas film, 'Dark City' is "Proto-Matrix" given the many similarities between the two movies. Fair or not, they do have a lot in common but I think the comparison does a disservice to what is still a very clever and well made genre-film that largely holds up today (minus some questionable early CG effects). The 4K re-release gives it a fresh coat of paint, looking extremely sharp on modern televisions, accentuating the mostly dark and moody imagery of this sci-fi film noir, and given it's title this is all very fitting. Alex Proyas has some bid ideas here; what is the human soul? Are we the sum of our memories? Can memories be distilled into chemistry? Is love transcendent? Many of these themes are explored with depth, with answers to many of the films mysteries being laid bare in mostly satisfying way. Performances are strong, with everyone seemingly understanding the assignment, though there isn't much for the female characters to do here. Which is unfortunate as what we do get from Jennifer Connelly is intriguing, if lacking depth. On the whole, despite being pretty weird, this is still a very fun movie, if a bit silly at times, that was unfortunately overshadowed by the phenomenon that was 'The Matrix' dropping the following year.
