SSSW - The Mandalorian S1E3 "The Sin"

Julian Meush November 25, 2019

With Chapter 3 of The Mandalorian we get the culmination of the beginning of what we expect to be an epic journey. Even if what journey will entail is still left unknown. As we watch the Razor Crest fly off into the depths of space at the end of this episode, we are left wondering where this adventure will go next. It can only be described as exciting as The Mandalorian leaves off the first, approximate, third of this season on such a mysterious note. Julian and Daniel, are joined by Jeremy Kozier to try to decipher that mystery as well as acknowledge and appreciate the amazing set pieces, and unbearable cuteness of Baby Yoda on this week’s episode of Small Screen Star Wars.

Watchmen S1E5 "Little Fear of Lightning": ToB Breakdown

Julian Meush November 19, 2019

The ToB Crew returns to discuss the first episode of HBO’s Watchmen that actually starts to answer some questions as opposed to just asking them. This episode primarily follows Looking Glass as they lay out his “secret origin” as well as some answers to other pressing questions (like where the hell Veidt has been this whole time!). More importantly however, it’s another amazing hour of television and Daniel, Jeremy, and Julian and here to break it all down.

SSSW - The Mandalorian S1E2 "The Child"

Julian Meush November 17, 2019

The Mandalorian Chapter 2 picked up right after the events of Chapter 1, and even though it’s another relatively short episode, the show is really starting to round into form. Choosing to forgo dialogue for long stretches in favour of scintillating visuals and a score that brings a distinct feel to the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian shows that it’s not interested in being a traditional television series. This episode provides less to unpack in terms of small details and Star Wars lore, but that doesn’t mean Julian and Dan can’t fill your ears with more in depth discussion about a show that still neck deep in mystery.

SSSW - The Mandalorian S1E1

Julian Meush November 14, 2019

It's been a long time in the making! Years of planning, blood, sweat, and tears, but it's finally here! I'm talking of course about Small Screen Star Wars - Tower of Babbles latest spin-off show. On this first official episode Julian and Daniel discuss their impressions on the Disney+ streaming service (including the surprise 4k remasters of the all of the Star Wars movies!) as well as look forward to the future of Star Wars, which is looking much more TV heavy than it ever has in the past. Then they review Chapter 1 of The Mandalorian, the ACTUAL long awaited show that finally brings live-action Star Wars to... the small screen!

Watchmen S1E4 "If You Don't Like My Story, Write Your Own": ToB Breakdown

Julian Meush November 12, 2019

The full ToB crew is back again to breakdown Watchmen Episode 4: "If You Don't Like My Story, Write Your Own”; while comparatively slow-paced, this episode continues to expand, and complicate, the world of Watchmen.

Lady Trieu secures an important plot of land; Angela brings Looking Glass up to speed; on Blake and Sister Night investigate the clock tower; after disposing of some evidence, Sister Night finds herself in a slippery situation; Will engages in some “passive aggressive exposition”, and Veidt... Veidt goes fishing for microwaveable clone babies? We think. Really hard to pin that one down...

Episode 144 - Green Lantern In My Loins

Julian Meush November 7, 2019

After recording a Watchmen ToB Breakdown the guys jumped into an impromptu, full episode, of the ToB Podcast. There was so much to cover, from “The Batman” news to the deluge of announcements that came along with the HBO Max content reveal, what was supposed to be a quick catch-up episode became a 2-hour deep dive Green Lantern, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, The Matrix and more. Luckily there’s lot of meat on the news bones for Julian, Jeremy and Dan to chew on.

Watchmen S1E3 "She Was Killed by Space Junk": ToB Breakdown

Julian Meush November 5, 2019

Dan and Jeremy are back to breakdown Watchmen’s third episode “She Was Killed by Space Junk” (along with the occasional Julian-interjection)

This week we’re re-introduced to a classic character from the original comics: Laurie Blake, formerly Laurel Jane Juspeczyk, AKA Laurie Jupiter, AKA Silk Spectre II, AKA The Comedienne. Now working for the federal government, the former masked adventurer is tasked with hunting down new vigilantes in violation of the Keene Act.. I’m sure she’s aware of the irony, she just doesn’t seem to care. Much like her father’s view of the world and Laurie’s perception of her own life, this episode is one long, complicated, joke; told in three installments this serves as the perfect backdrop for her character and provides some much needed context for the current state of play.

The episode challenges the audience to look at characters differently; by using a former vigilante to hold a mirror up to the established protagonists the show adds even more tension and, while certainly answering some questions, once again the episode leaves us with more… But y’know, in a good way.

Watchmen S1E1 "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice": ToB Breakdown

Julian Meush October 23, 2019

ToB Breakdowns are back! Dan and Jeremy got together to delve into the latest HBO phenomenon. Based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ prototypical dark comics, Watchmen simultaneously evokes familiar themes from the source material, while managing to fearlessly tackle deep modern issues as well.

Set amidst an alternate version of present day Oklahoma, HBO’s Watchmen introduces us to a violent, grimy, racially-charged world where police are forced to conceal their identities and (allegedly) trans-dimensional squid rain from the sky. Regina King, Don Johnson, and Tim Blake Nelson lead the cast as sanctioned detective/vigilante hybrids fighting a losing battle against an increasingly dangerous hate-group, and a crippling bureaucracy.

From a harrowing opening sequence to an enigmatic twist ending the first episode perfectly establishes the series’ tone, and with a clock ticking inexorably over the episode’s final moments we know begin to understand that by the time the answers are revealed it will be too late. Always has been, always will be. Too late.

Bonus Episode - ToB Film Club - Kingpin (1996)
Oct 19, 2025

Before Matt officially joined the show as a co-host he was invited on as guest to talk about one of his favourite movies of all time, ‘Swingers’. Now returning in an official capacity to the ToB Film Club, he brings with him another film from his top-3, another comedy, ‘Kingpin’. A Farrelly brothers film that followed up their smash hit breakout, ‘Dumb and Dumber’, and you can see the through lines. Like ‘Dumb and Dumber’ we follow two guys who are down on their luck as they head out on the road where chaos and hilarity ensue. Unfortunately it wasn’t the hit they hoped despite a killer cast, including legends Bill Murray, Randy Quaid and Woody Harrelson and as a result it didn't leave as large of a cultural footprint as some of the other Farrelly brothers films from this era. It's been nearly 30 years so now seems as good a time as any to revisit this sleeper and see what everyone was missing back then.

SSSW - Tales of the Underworld
Jun 5, 2025

Lucasfilm Animation has been hard at work on their next major project, 'Maul: Shadow Lord', but they've found the time to deliver another installment in their "Tales of" anthology series. The first ones covering the Jedi and the Empire, they now turn their focus towards the Underworld. However, be warned, this is a bit of a misnomer. Don't expect any crime syndicates or really any large scale criminality here. These 2 mini-arcs instead focus on Asajj Ventress (I know, not the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the Underworld) as she assists a young Jedi on the run from the Empire, and the origin story of Cad Bane. Which admittedly is closer in line with the criminal underworld concept, but is really more interested in telling a western style revenge story instead. All in all, despite the always great visuals and sound/music design, and few interesting ideas, there's not enough meat on the bone here to satisfy most viewers. But most disappointing is its failure to capitalize on the potential of the Underworld concept.

SSSW/ToB Film Club - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
May 22, 2025

It's hard to believe that 'Rogue One' premiered nearly a decade ago. At the time, it was fairly well received, considered to be a decent first step into the standalone Star Wars movies, if not a bit messy. As the years passed, we learned more about the production. Gareth Edwards, who retained sole directing credit, was assisted by Tony Gilroy to "fix" the project. Tony went so far as to call it a "corpse" when he came aboard for rewrites and reshoots. It was Tony's inclusion that brought us some of the movies most memorable moments, and ultimately led him to leading the charge on 'Andor', a prequel project that flew under the radar as hits like 'The Mandalorian' hogged the spotlight. With 'Andor' now complete, considered by many to be a masterpiece in storytelling, not just in Star Wars but on television in general, now is the most appropriate time to reexamine the movie that spawned the Cassian-centered prequel series with fresh eyes. 'Andor', which leads directly into the events of 'Rogue One' recontextualizes much of the film, creating a unique viewing experience that pays off a multitude of threads that are brilliantly laid over the two seasons of 'Andor'. It takes the movie, which was already pretty good, and makes it great. Now existing as part of a whole that weaves a cohesive narrative from the nascent moments of the Rebellion all the way through to the destruction of the Death Star in 1977 (the seed that begat ALL Star Wars, and what we appropriately align our Star Wars BBY calendars to). It all feels wholistic and considered when viewed from the broader perspective - an accomplishment that should set a shining example of what Star Wars can and should aspire to.
