Does Disney Buying Fox Hurt The X-Men Franchise?

Julian Meush November 9, 2017

With the news that Disney could possibly buy 21st Century Fox a lot of the surrounding talk has been about what would happen with Fox's Marvel properties, specifically The X-Men. People get excited at the prospect of seeing Wolverine and the gang join up with The Avengers in the MCU but is it really a good idea?

Fall TV - Early Impressions

Julian Meush October 5, 2017

It’s that time of year; the temperature is dropping, the leaves are falling and new shows are hitting our TVs. Things are a bit more complicated this year however. It’s not as easy as it once was. You can't just set your PVR to record all the new hit series. Some things are on premium cable, others can only be found on streaming services. So which one’s are worth watching? I’ve taken a look at some of this fall’s biggest new series and give you the scoop on which one’s are worth your time and money.

2017 So Far: Movies

Julian Meush July 3, 2017

With 2017 already half over it's time to look back on some of the movies that have graced the silver screen since January 1. Let's be honest, the first half of the year hasn't been great for film but the stuff that was good, was really good. I highlight the best of the best (and one of the worst) in my top 3 standout films of 2017 so far.

Marvel's Luke Cage: Season 1 Review

Julian Meush October 5, 2016

When Marvel releases a new Netflix series everything stops. I become a hermit for a few days as I binge the entire season in an unhealthy amount of time. This continued to be the case with the release of Marvel’s Luke Cage. I shut myself off from the world, and much like a child that eats too fast, I ingested the entire 13-hour run in just over two days. I’ve spent the time since then actually digesting it. But unlike the kid who eats too quickly, it didn't leave me feeling sick to my stomach. Instead, I thought it was a fun ride even if it was, if you’ll allow me to continue the food analogy, somewhat undercooked.

There's Room for Both DC and Marvel Movies

Julian Meush August 13, 2015

The internet hordes that fill the comment sections and message boards across the web tend to come across as a somewhat bipolar. You see the extremes of people's opinions everywhere. You either love something or hate something, it’s either the best or the worst, right or wrong. You get the idea. And lately the internet commenters have turned their divisive gaze towards Marvel and DC...

Whats Wrong with Today's Animated Programming?

Julian Meush April 10, 2014

With Beware the Batman on the verge of cancellation I take a look at the recent trend in animated programming moving away from complex storytelling. Why have great shows been sentenced to early deaths only to be replaced by mindless drivel? I attempt to pull the curtain back and take a look at what is wrong with animated programming today.

Bonus Episode - 2026 Oscars Preview Show
Mar 14, 2026

Julian is back from vacation just in time or the 98th Academy Awards! Airing tomorrow (Match 15th), hosted once again by Conan O’Brien, it’s the most prestigious night in Hollywood (after the Tobies of course). This is Matt’s first time on the preview show, so the format is tweaked a bit from our traditional reviews of Oscar noms, though there is still some of that. A broader approach is taken, with a larger focus on the ceremony itself, a peak at the front runners in each category, as well as the betting odds. It’s not all new-school though, find Julian’s traditional “will win”/’want to win” ballots below (Matt will put his together privately) for those curious. Lastly, look for a follow-up show discussing the ceremonies, unpacking the winners, and scoring the ballots next week. Until then, grab your tux, hit the red carpet, rub elbows with the celebs, and enjoy the 2026 Oscars!

SSSW - Kathleen Kennedy Steps Down

SSSW - Kathleen Kennedy Steps Down
Feb 12, 2026

There have been rumours circulating for years about the eventual retirement of Kathleen Kennedy from her role as President of Lucasfilm. Never mind the seemingly constant swirling demands for her head from segments of the fan base. And while those rumours and demands may have felt at times unwarranted, they were nevertheless always going to be right... eventually. Kathleen Kennedy, after 14 years as head of the studio announced that she would be stepping down and returning to a more traditional producer role, and her successors would be Dave Filoni on the creative side, and Lynwen Brennan on the business side. Julian and Rachel unpack the announcement, the press coverage, and even Kennedy's exit interview with Deadline, reading between the lines and trying to get a read on her legacy. As well as examining what life might be like under Filoni as Star Wars enters a new era under his watch. Plus, a check-in on 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' following the underwhelming Super Bowl spot.

Episode 204 - Oscar Noms + 2026 Predictions
Jan 26, 2026

As noted by the recent Tobies, awards season continues in full flight, so it's no surprise to have The Oscars drop their nominations just in time for Matt and Julian to break them down. 'Sinners' taking home 16 noms sets an Oscars record and (more importantly) validates Julian's recent Tobie pick. Plus, the guys return to a more traditional news format with headlines about James Bond, Game of Thrones, He-Man and more! Finally, the guys look into their crystal balls, gazing into the future, to make entertainment-based predictions for the year 2026. How will the WB/Netflix deal play out? Will Star Wars have a hit with 'The Mandalorian and Grogu'? Will Nolan's 'The Odyssey' be as big as 'Oppenheimer'? Only the ToB hosts can tell you! (No future lotto tickets or sports almanacs unfortunately)

Episode 203 - The 2025 Tobie Awards (9th Annual)
Jan 19, 2026

With the Golden Globes holding their annual ceremony last week, it signals only one thing - it’s AWARD SEASON BABY! And of course, when one thinks of the most prestigious awards in entertainment, of course names like Oscar, Tony, and Emmy might come to mind. But held on equal footing with those self-congratulatory titans is of course the name Tobie. That’s right y’all THE TOBIES ARE BACK for another go around at the top three best movies and shows of year. And while there may be a new host in the rotation, the format and the prestige remain unchanged. Join Julian and now Matt to explore what, upon reflection, was a pretty damn good year for visual storytelling on both the big and small screens.
