Episode 82 - Westworld and Luke Cage

Julian Meush October 12, 2016

After a week off the ToB Crew returns to a mountain of news coming out of New York Comic Con and beyond. The guys get right into it by discussing Wolverine 3 (Logan), the latest from the Batman solo film (The Batman) and even a little bit about Blade Runner 2 (Blade Runner 2049), before moving onto discuss Disney's never ending roll-out of live action remakes, the latest from the set of Justice League and Daniel Craig's most recent remarks regarding James Bond. The gang then turn their attention towards television as they dissect the Iron Fist trailer, breakdown the premiers of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl and mourn/celebrate the death of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. To finish it all off Julian, Daniel and Jeremy review both the premier episode of Westworld as well as Marvel's Luke Cage season one in its entirety. They attempt to wrap their heads around the high concept, sci-fi series from HBO before moving on to talk about Marvel's latest Netflix project. All of this and so much more in this weeks Tower of Babble Podcast!

Movies

  • Trailers:
    • John Wick chapter 2
    • Power Rangers
  • We have the title for Batman's next solo movie and it comes from the caped crusader himself Ben Affleck. According to the writer, actor, director and producer the film will be titled “The Batman”. It's still early so things can change (Ahem BvS) but that appears to be at least the working title.
  • Sticking with movie title reveals, concise ones at that, Wolverine 3 is now called “Logan” and has a poster.
    • Director James Mangold also showed off a picture of page 1 of the script as well as a very old looking Patrick Stewart as Professor X
    • The villain has also been officially confirmed, long assumed to be Mr Sinister, it appears that Boyd Holbrook will play Donald Pierce who in the comics is a cyborg and member of the Hellfire Club.
    • Mr. Sinister could still appear
  • One last Title confirmation, Blade Runner 2 is now officially called Blade Runner 2049
  • Deathstroke might appear in Justice League after all
    • Snyder tweeted out a behind the scenes photo that showed what looked like Deathstroke on a storyboard for the film
  • Snyder also released a really cool behind the scenes video to commemorate the last day of shooting in the UK.
    • Cool shot of the JL walking up stairs and riding elevators
    • “Borg Life” tee shirt
  • Sticking with DC for a moment, the extended cut of Suicide Squad will hit on November 15th on Blu Ray and 13 minutes of footage.
  • We have confirmation that Dr Strange will be in Avengers: Infinity War and Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp will appear in Avengers 4.
  • As an aside, the final trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One will be attached to Dr. Strange when it premieres next month.
  • Speaking of Rogue One, Forest Whitaker, who plays Saw Gerrera in the Star Wars spinoff has joined the cast of Black Panther as an elder statesman in Wakanda.
  • So I don't want to say I told you so but… I told you so. Disney is making a live action Lion King from the same director as their live action Jungle Book, Jon Favreau.
    • JB earned almost a billion (965.8 mill) worldwide, with a sequel planned.
    • Don't forget the upcoming Beauty and the Beast
  • The Disney live action news doesn't stop there though, with news that Guy Ritchie is in talks to direct a live action Aladin movie.
    • It's hard to imagine Genie without Robin Williams
    • Oh and they’re making a Mulan movie for 2018 as well.
  • Sticking with Disney, Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales has got its first teaser that shows off the villain Captain Salavar played by Javier Bardem but conspicuously featured zero Johnny Depp.
  • According to JJ Abrams an announcement for the Portal movie is coming soon.
  • James Bond backpedaling: earlier this year we talked about a story that claimed that Daniel Craig was offered 150 mill to play Bond for two more movies. That appears to now be proven false.
    • Secondly it also appears that Mr. Craig himself is walking back those “Wrist slitting” remarks he had made after finishing filming of Spectre now saying
    • "They say that s*** sticks, and that definitely stuck, It was the day after filming [stopped on Spectre]. I'd been away from home for a year. Boo-hoo. It's a good gig. I enjoy it."
    • "As far as I'm concerned, I've got the best job in the world. I'll keep doing it as long as I still get a kick out of it. If I were to stop doing it, I would miss it terribly."

TV

  • The current Spider-Man animated series “Ultimate Spider-Man” will conclude this January to be replaced by a new animated Spider-Man series.
  • One of my favourite shows on television Archer is apparently only going to go until season 10 according to the creator Adam Reed. The show is going into season 7 this year called “Archer: Dreamland” and will take place in 1947 where Archer is a PI tracking down the killer of his old partner Woodhouse.
    • He originally was going to end with season 8 but had “a brain explosion of ideas” that would keep him interested to at least 10.
  • Agents of SHIELD introduced a new director of shield this season and after his name was finally revealed as Jeffrey Mace things have gotten much more interesting
    • In the comics he's knows as “the patriot” also known as Captain America!
    • He served as Cap while Rogers was frozen in ice
    • A really cool backstory about how he served as cap actually even if the show won't explore it. Comics and their retcons. Fun stuff.

Marvel’s Netflix

  • Iron Fist trailer from NYCC will premiere on Netflix March 17, 2017
    • I’m 99% sure the narrator in the trailer who appears to be Danny Rand’s trainer is non other than Hoon Lee who voices Splinter on the Nickelodeon TMNT series.
    • The have officially finished filming
  • Punisher has officially begun filming and have announced that Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page has joined the cast
  • Sigourney Weaver has been cast as the main villain in The Defenders

DCCW

  • Arrow, Flash and Supergirl have all premiered their latest season
  • Down on Flash
  • Up on Arrow
  • Somewhere in between on Supergirl
  • The animated Vixen series that premiered awhile back on CW Seed will return for season 2 this Friday (Oct 13)
  • Announced at NYCC the new series will be titled Marvel's Spider-Man and will debut on Disney XD in 2017
  • It's going “back to the basics” with the story

Westworld premiere

  • Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy produced
  • Ep 1 ratings are in. 3.3 mill on sunday night which is comparable with True Detectives launch but falls behind Game of Thrones at 4.2 mill
  • Ep 2 premiered early because of the debate
  • Based the 1973 film that was written and directed by Michael Crichton
  • “The actual detailing of these three worlds -- and also the kinds of fantasies that people experienced in them -- were movie fantasies, and because they were movie fantasies, they got to be very strange-looking on the written page. They weren’t things that had literal antecedents, literary antecedents. They were things that had antecedents in John Ford and John Wayne and Errol Flynn -- that sort of thing.”
  • It had a sequel and a short lived TV show i the 80s but most importantly went on to influence Jurassic Park
  • Jonathan Nolan, in an interview with Vice, on some other inspirations for Westworld. In this case video games. Mentioning specific games like Bioshock, Red Dead and Skyrim
    • He’s “fascinated by the concept of writing a story in which the protagonists actions aren't part of the story.”
    • He also noted he was intrigued by titles like Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim where “morality is variable, in which the hero’s moral components exist on a spectrum”
    • Lastly he also mentioned being interested in NPCs talking about “lives that happen whether you’re there or not”
  • “These violent delights have violent ends”
  • Cast:
    • Evan Rachel Wood (Deloris)
    • Jeffrey Wright (Bernard Lowe)
    • James Marsden (Teddy)
    • Anthony Hopkins (Dr. Robert Ford)
    • Ed Harris (Man in Black)
    • Luke Hemsworth (Stubbs)

SSSW/ToB Film Club - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
May 22, 2025

It's hard to believe that 'Rogue One' premiered nearly a decade ago. At the time, it was fairly well received, considered to be a decent first step into the standalone Star Wars movies, if not a bit messy. As the years passed, we learned more about the production. Gareth Edwards, who retained sole directing credit, was assisted by Tony Gilroy to "fix" the project. Tony went so far as to call it a "corpse" when he came aboard for rewrites and reshoots. It was Tony's inclusion that brought us some of the movies most memorable moments, and ultimately led him to leading the charge on 'Andor', a prequel project that flew under the radar as hits like 'The Mandalorian' hogged the spotlight. With 'Andor' now complete, considered by many to be a masterpiece in storytelling, not just in Star Wars but on television in general, now is the most appropriate time to reexamine the movie that spawned the Cassian-centered prequel series with fresh eyes. 'Andor', which leads directly into the events of 'Rogue One' recontextualizes much of the film, creating a unique viewing experience that pays off a multitude of threads that are brilliantly laid over the two seasons of 'Andor'. It takes the movie, which was already pretty good, and makes it great. Now existing as part of a whole that weaves a cohesive narrative from the nascent moments of the Rebellion all the way through to the destruction of the Death Star in 1977 (the seed that begat ALL Star Wars, and what we appropriately align our Star Wars BBY calendars to). It all feels wholistic and considered when viewed from the broader perspective - an accomplishment that should set a shining example of what Star Wars can and should aspire to.

SSSW - Andor S2 Finale
May 15, 2025

After only 4 weeks - the blink of an eye - it's all over. The best Star Wars story since the Original Trilogy has graced our screens and left us in awe. These final three episodes weren't able to reach the emotional highs of last week's arc, but that wasn't the goal. Instead, it provides time to look back at what brought us here, and sets the stage for the climax of the story to take place not in this moment, but within the now recontextualized film that birthed all of this in the first place, 'Rogue One'. And while the show may carry Cassian's name on the title screen, it's been the cast of characters we've met along the way that truly elevated this experience. Not to pick favourites, but in particular, Luthen and Kleya, who get an episode all to themselves this week are the standouts. And what an episode it was, as their story which shepherded much of the series came to an end, as we all expected it would have to. Embracing those feelings of closure, in the final moments of the series, as Cassian flies off into 'Rogue One', we are treated to our last glimpses of our heroes and villains. From Dedra to Vel and even Perrin, we are left to consider their fates as the story marches with inevitability into what begat all of this way back in 1977. Will we ever see Kleya, Vel, Wilmon, or Bix again? One can only hope - and rebellions? Well, they're built on hope.

SSSW - Andor S2 E7 - 9
May 9, 2025

When dealing in the world of prequels, it’s impossible to escape the inevitable - Anakin will fall, Han will win the Falcon, Cassian will die on Scarif. Somehow, in the midst of some of the most thrilling episodes of television ever put to screen, Tony Gilroy and his team found a way to address that impending doom and weaponize it against the audience to induce some of the most gut wrenching and heart breaking moments we’ve yet to see on ‘Andor’ - “There’s some place he needs to be”. At a larger scale, the show continues to outdo itself on a weekly basis, proving that the Star Wars galaxy provides a colour pallet of some of the richest hues from which to paint bold and personal stories. Proving you can go beyond the larger than life stories of heroics and grandeur to human stories of loss and pain and everything in between. That’s without mentioning the deft touch in pulling in themes that resonates with the contemporary while remaining timeless - a feeling that is a staple of Star Wars. Every detail is considered, every character is deep and interesting. There isn’t much more that can be said about such a powerful piece of art, except that not even the audience can escape the inevitable - only one week remains of this masterpiece.

SSSW - Andor S2 E4 - 6

I'm sorry to tell you all, but we're already halfway through this final season of 'Andor'. Fortunately, the quality hasn't dipped one bit as we accelerate into the finish. Join Julian and Rachel as they savour every minute of this 3-episode arch that takes us to Ghorman for the first time on screen. Tony Gilroy and the team at Lucasfilm outdid themselves yet again in crafting every detail. The size of the set alone is impressive, but they take it a step further by developing a unique culture and even language different from anything we've seen in Star Wars before. It all fits seamlessly into this next chapter of the story that has a heavy emphasis on spycraft as the pressure ramps up for both the Rebellion and the Empire.
