Episode 142 - Spider-Man: Returning Home

Julian Meush October 3, 2019

After weeks of “Slow News Day” podcasts the the floodgates have finally opened and there’s almost too much too talk about. The main story of course is Spiderman’s triumphant, albeit temporary, return to the MCU; the guys discuss both the implications for the MCU as well as potential Sony Universe concepts. From there we transition to Star Wars with news that Kevin Feige may be bringing his Marvel experience to Disney’s other cinematic universe, also, the Obi-Wan series has found a director and J.J. Abrams opinion on Emperor Palapatine’s inclusion in the Episode IX. All this plus some crazy trailers and a couple “Agree or Disagree” segments.. feels good to have a real show again.

      • Marvel wants John Burnthall’s Punisher to return in MCU films.

  • Star Wars

    • J.J. Abrams comments on bringing back Palpateen. (Slashfilm)

      • “Some people feel like we shouldn’t revisit the idea of Palpatine, and I completely understand that. But if you’re looking at these nine films as one story, I don’t know many books where the last few chapters have nothing to do with those that have come before. If you look at the first eight films, all the set-ups of what we’re doing in IX are there in plain view.”

    • The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series has found a director in Deborah Chow .(The Hollywood Reporter)

      • She has directed two episodes of The Mandalorian, as well as episodes of American Gods, Better Call Saul, Lost in Space, Jessica Jones, Reign and Mr. Robot.

    • The Marvel Studios chief, Kevin Fiege, is developing a Star Wars movie at Lucasfilm. (The Hollywood Reporter)

      • "We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together." - Disney Studios co-chairman Alan Horn.

      • Agree or Disagree

        • IGN, and other outlets, see the Star Wars/Feige announcement as a prelude to him taking over Lucasfilm. Do you agree with them in their thinking that Feige will leave Marvel Studios and takeover from Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm?

  • Sony Pictures is negotiating with Travis Knight to direct the Uncharted film. The film will begin production early next year. (Deadline)

    • Knight directed the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, and Kubo and The Two Strings. He was also lead animator for stop-motion animation studio Laika, on films that have included Coraline, The Boxtrolls and ParaNorman.

  • The Irishmen scores 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Looks like we have another Scorcese classic on our hands.

SSSW - Year in Review 2025 + Visions Vol 3
Jan 5, 2026

With the back half of 2025 being relatively quiet from a Star Wars perspective, it's hard to remember that 'Andor' wrapped up it's two season run and blew us all away THIS year. Never mind that 'Skeleton Crew' also wrapped up in 2025! Julian and Rachel, using the help of this handy Starwars.com article as reference, look back at the year that was in Star Wars. Overall, despite things slowing down content-wise, 'Andor' alone makes it a stellar year, and with new movies on the horizon and a new animated series set to drop in 2026, there's still plenty to be excited about going forward. If that wasn't enough, join us as we explore 'Star Wars: Visions - Volume III', posing the question: has the Star Wars anime concept run it's course?

Bonus Episode - ToB Film Club - Surviving Christmas (2004)
Dec 24, 2025

Happy holidays ToB Fans! Completing a string of 3 straight publicly available Film Club episodes, commemorating the show's relaunch, we finish with our annual tradition of doing a Christmas movie for December. This year, with Matt joining the show it was his choice. He went with a movie from the mid-2000s that he's revisited time and again - 'Surviving Christmas'. A Ben Affleck vehicle that comes from a rocky era of his, just one year removed from 'Gili'. Fortunately, it features a strong supporting cast, with both Catherine O'Hara and the late James Gandolfini stealing the show and preventing this from being a complete disaster. Devoid of any type of strong holiday message, we spend much of the movie indulging Affleck's character's obnoxious desires, and despite some funny moments peppered throughout and a relatively strong third act, the tonal inconsistency and unlikability of the main character leave this movie mired in mediocrity. See you all again in 2026!

Episode 202 - Could Things Be Worse?
Dec 17, 2025

It is often said we're living through "unprecedented times", and I must admit that it rings true when reading the news. Normally, we're fortunate enough to be discussing the frivolous world of entertainment - shielding us from much of the dower nature of the the modern world. Unfortunately, that does not mean we are immune - this week proves there's still plenty of bad news in the entertainment world to go around. And while we try to focus on the fun stuff, sometimes the bad stuff threatens things we love, like creators, and movie theatres, and therefor must be called out. As such, Matt and Julian spend the front half of the show talking about the Netflix/WB deal, and the Disney's investment in AI. Pick your poison on that one. However, stick around, as things take a turn back to the fun as the latest in film and tv news is covered, including discussions about a new '28 Years Later' movie, a new 'Men in Black', 'Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair', and 'Stranger Things',. All this and so much more on this week's Tower of Babble Podcast!

Bonus Episode - Warner Bros. Sales Chaos - Daily DVR
Dec 11, 2025

Julian joins Axel and Andy on The Daily DVR Podcast to wring out all the angst surrounding the impeding sale of Warner Bros. and their myriad of assets, including HBO, to Netflix. With Paramount still sniffing around this is far from done but all of it is far from good for fans of movies and TV.
