Episode 156 - Too Soon for the MCU Spider-Verse

Julian Meush October 9, 2020

With about a month since our last full show, there's been a lot of news piling up. The guys dive into all the juiciest stories to cover the latest in film and television (oh and obviously the biggest story of the month, Steve joining Super Smash Bros). Unfortunately, before getting to the fun stuff, Julian, Dan, and Jeremy, hypothesize about a grim future where movie theatre chains have all gone out of business. It's truly the darkest timeline, but one that seems all too possible, with all the remaining blockbuster releases for this year being moved into next year (or later in some cases). On a more exciting note, the news of Jamie Foxx's Electro joining the MCU for Spider-Man 3, along with Doctor Strange, begs the question if it's too soon to start introducing a multiverse in the MCU. On the DC front, it's discovered that reshoots for the Snyder Cut of Justice League will cost $70 million, and the much maligned streaming service, DC Universe, will officially close its doors as all it's major shows will move to HBO Max (don't worry, it'll live on in a comic book subscription form). Speaking of TV, 'The Boys' is getting a spin-off series, Ted Lasso is renewed for season 2 (I had to mention it) and Nick Fury is getting his own Disney+ series. All that and so much more (I know, I always say that, but this time there's literally so much more stuff!), on this week's Tower of Babble Podcast!

Show Notes

Movies

  • More stories about the perilous state that is the theatre business. With all major blockbusters moving out of 2020 (and in some cases 2021), we brainstorm what happens in a hypothetical world where movie theatres chains go under.

    • Most major releases pushed back to 2021 or later.

      • The Matrix 4 - Dec 22, 2021

      • The Batman - March, 2022

      • The Flash - Nov 4, 2022

      • Shazam 2 - June 2, 2023

      • Black Adam - No longer dated

      • Dune - Late 2021

      • James Bond: No Time to Die - Spring 2021

      • F9 - May 28, 2021

      • Black Widow - May 7, 2021 (first time since 2009 there will be no MCU film)

      • Wonder Woman 1984 - currently this christmas but it’ll move.

  • Trailers:

    • Mank - David Fincher

    • Monster Hunter - Milla Jovovich

  • Pixar’s ‘Soul’ to premiere on Disney+. It was originally supposed to premiere in theatres on Dec 25th 2020. No word on if it will be a premium release like Mulan was.

  • ‘The Lion King’ is getting the The Godfather treatment! ‘The Lion King 2’ is in the works from ‘Moonlight’ director Barry Jenkins. Jeff Nathanson will return to write the script. It will apparently tell Mufasa’s origin story through flashback.

  • Spider-Man 3

    • Jamie Foxx’s Electro is returning… somehow. Apparently Electro won’t be blue this time though according to the star.

    • Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will also appear.

      • Vincent D’Onofrio is still trying to get his Kingpin back into the MCU. He also liked our tweet so… that’s pretty cool too obviously.

    • The movies title will apparently include the word “home” somehow, according to Amy Pascal. ‘Home Away from Home’ perhaps???

  • Aaron Sorkin is interested in doing a ‘Social Network 2’. Saying that we’ve now “discovered the dark side of Facebook”. Fincher would likely return.

  • ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ are coming to 4K Bluray in the ‘Middle Earth Collection’.

  • Sabrina Carpenter is set to star in and produce a modern reimagining of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for Netflix. The film will be set during a music festival called ‘Wonderland’. - THR

  • Joker producer wants DC to make a Mr Freeze movie, saying that “if any villain was studied like Joker there are so many great possibilities. You could deal with Mr Freeze and the loss of his wife, the empathy, the emotions that created. I could see making a movie.”

  • WB is launching a Dr Seuss cinematic universe. It will start with 3 movies.

    • ‘Cat in the Hat’

    • ‘Thing One and Thing Two’

    • ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’

  • Justice League: Snyder Cut reshoots are set to cost around $70 million.

    • Junkie XL says that besides the Man of Steel theme and the Wonder Woman theme, all the music is new for the snyder cut.

  • Rian Johnson revealed that he’s working on a script for another Benoit Blanc movie.

    • “It’s not really a ‘Knives Out’ sequel. I need to come up with a title so I can stop calling it ‘The Knives Out Sequel’ because it's just Daniel Craig as the same detective with a totally new cast.

TV

  • Trailers:

    • Amazon Prime

      • Invincible - A Robert Kirkman adaptation with a stellar cast.

      • The Expanse S5 - Premiers Dec 16th, 2020

    • Netflix

      • Blood of Zeus - Oct 27th - Netflix

    • Disney+

      • Wandavision (late 2020)

  • A “The Boys” spin-off series is in development following its huge S2 debut (despite backlash over release strategy).

  • Ted Lasso renewed for S2

    • Side note, Jason Sudeikis also liked our tweet. Also very cool.

  • Ms. Marvel a.k.a Kamala Khan has been cast for the Disney+ series.

    • Iman Vellani is a Canadian actress from Markham, Ontario, with no prior credits. According to Wikipedia she’s born to muslim immigrants from Pakistan. This is fitting because when the Kamala Khan iteration of the Ms. Marvel character debuted in 2014, she was the first Muslim Marvel hero to have her own comic title.

  • A ‘Nick Fury’ series is apparently in development at Disney+ with Sam Jackson reprising his role.

  • Speaking of Disney+, the service has launched a feature called “GroupWatch” in Canada and the US. It let’s up to 7 people with different accounts watch the same show together. It will come to Europe later this year.

  • HBO Max

    • DC Universe is now dead (in a way)… unsurprisingly.

    • James Gunn is writing an 8 episode Suicide Squad spin-off series. It will follow Peacemaker and star John Cena, who will reprise his role from the upcoming film. Gunn will direct some episodes as well. It has a straight to series order.

    • Harley Quinn renewed for S3

    • Doom Patrol renewed for S3

    • Ridley Scott’s ‘Raised by Wolves’ renewed for S2

  • CBS All Access will rebrand as Paramount+

    • A scripted drama about the making of ‘The Godfather’ will be coming to the service. Titled ‘The Offer’

  • Supergirl will end its run on CW with S6.

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 5 & 6

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 5 & 6
Apr 23, 2026

We’ve reached the halfway point of the season and with it comes a tonal shift back to the roots of Star Wars animation - 'The Clone Wars'. With the arrival of the Empire, the focus shifts away from Maul and his dealings and toward the pair of Jedi as they are now in the crosshairs. The noire tone takes a back seat, next to Maul, as things become more pulpy, mixed with an impending doom that is reminiscent of the final season of 'The Clone Wars'. The set-piece action sequences get an injection of scale and danger, which is exciting, and some of the early seeding of characters like Rylee start to pay off. While maybe a bit different from the previous 4 episodes, the quality and the stakes remain high (well... for every character except Maul I suppose). Join Julian and Rachel as the unpack it all in excruciating detail.

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 3 & 4
Apr 15, 2026

Now that the premiere is out of the way, the team at Lucasfilm Animation can focus on driving the story forward with authority. The pacing is much improved this week as time feel more evenly dispersed across the characters. There's a greater concentration on characters who can wield a lightsaber and it's appreciated. No shade to the crime syndicate storyline, but we've kind of seen all that already (it was quite literally a 'Clone Wars' arc). The action remains strong while taking another step forward with lightsaber duels joining the mix. Plus, the fast cutting from last week seems to have been dialed back, which is appreciated as it provides more clarity in action scenes. For example, Devon's engagements with Maul are gripping, and with the additional time provided to Master Daki, the stakes feel ratcheted up. Kevin Kinner's music remains a highlight, the illusions to the Anakin vs Obi-Wan Mustafar theme was a particular highlight. In general, there is still room for more character growth, especially with characters not named Maul, who really can't/won't change - but happy to proven wrong! This show feels like it's in full swing already, which is good because next week things look to be really heating up as we hit the half way mark. Julian and Rachel unpack it all!

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 1 & 2
Apr 9, 2026

It's been some time since we've been able to sink our pointy teeth into a meaty Star Wars animated project. Since the finale of 'The Bad Batch' all the way back in May of 2024, all we've had to tie us over were anthology installments of varying quality. Praise the Force, that wait is finally over with the release of 'Maul: Shadow Lord', the latest full length series from Lucasfilm Animation. The series marks another technical leap forward for the animation studio, taking their patented visual style and adding another layer of detail and artistry that jumps off the screen. The story follows the titular, Maul shortly after the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, he's looking for revenge and the series wastes no time dropping us right into the thick of things (3 car/speeder chases in 40 mins is impressive). And while we know much of Maul's criminal dealings (and most of the rest of his life actually), the introduction of a new Padawan into the mix, another apprentice-to-be for Maul, adds a layer of intrigue to an otherwise underworld focused story. Join Julian and Rachel as they unpack Chapter 1: "The Dark Revenge" and Chapter 2: "Sinister Schemes", in intricate detail.

Bonus Episode - ToB Film Club - Slap Shot (1977) - Review + Commentary Track
Apr 8, 2026

In honour of Matt strapping on the goalie pads again for the first time in many years (and not completely pulling his groin), it only made sense to revisit the classic hockey comedy, 'Slap Shot' from 1977. This isn't the first time seeing the movie for either Julian or Matt but it's been a long time so there are plenty of questions still to answer. Here's a few examples: How well shot are the hockey scenes? Does the movie feature more or less actual hockey than 'Heated Revelry'? Does the plot and/or humour hold up all these years later? All these questions are answered in time, but we're also trying something new this month. Instead of a traditional movie review, Julian and Matt decided to go a layer deeper and add a full commentary track for the movie as well. So enjoy the full review, which takes place, before, during, and after the movie itself, and sync up your own copy of the movie (there's a countdown before we start) to get the full experience!
