Episode 137 - Spider-Man: Homeless

What. A. Day! It’s not often this much jaw dropping news hits all at once. Even more rare, is having a podcast scheduled to record that same day. Luckily all those stars aligned for Julian, Dan, and Jeremy to get behind the misc and discuss the breaking news. The most pressing of which being a dispute between Disney and Sony that has Spider-Man hanging in the balance. Early reports were suggesting that Spider-Man was on his way out of the MCU as the two giant movie studios couldn’t come to terms on a new co-financing deal. If that wasn’t enough, mere moments later, Warner Brothers announced that they were bringing the gang back together for a new Matrix sequel that would include the return of Keanu Reaves and Carrie-Anne Moss, with Lana Wachowski directing! Plus, there’s news about a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi series at Disney+ and a new title for Bond 25. All that, and so much more on this weeks Tower of Babble Podcast!

Episode 133 - The End of an Era

With the X-men franchise as we know it coming to an end, the guys look back on the series as a whole and imagine what will come next. This year has/will see the form of an ending for basically all the major pop-culture properties, including X-Men, Avengers, Game of Thrones, and Star Wars at the end of the year. With so many of the tentpole films franchises coming to a conclusion there’s room for new and experimental shows like Love, Death & Robots; or the upcoming Halo series to really shine.

All in all, it was a slow news week, but exciting things are yet to come.

Episode 132 - New Batmen

With GoT officially wrapped the full ToB crew sat down to catch up on all the stories we’ve been neglecting over the past couple months. Multiple casting confirmations, including a new Batman for both the small and big screens, Idris Elba joining Suicide Squad, and, somehow, James Gunn’s return to Marvel Studios. All this plus at least a million new movie trailers, and what seems like a never-ending stream of Star Wars news.

It’s Julian and Jeremy in The Tower this week as the two review a bounty of DC related content, including the season finale of Titans, CW’s big “Elseworlds” crossover event, and of course the latest instalment in the much maligned DCEU, Aquaman. It all started with the Captain Marvel teaser and only got more exciting as the news kept rolling in. The Joaquin Phoenix Joker reveal would have been enough but on top of that there was also an interview with Disney CEO, Bob Iger, that had him spilling the beans on the future of the MCU and Star Wars, as well as the James Gunn firing. Oh and did we mention that Emmy awards winners were announced, and that there’s a live action Avatar: The Last Air Bender in the works at Netflix? Yea, that happened too! With Jeremy jetting off to Europe it leaves just Julian and Dan to carry the load. Fortunately (or I suppose, unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) the last week was pretty light on news. The big story being The Academy announcing the addition of a new "popular film" award for The Oscars with almost no info and then dropping the mic and disappearing. Beyond that, the guys also break down a few smaller news bits and indulge in the tangents to pass the time. Plus! Make sure to stay after the credits to enjoy a rare "after dark" segment where Julian and Dan break free from the shackles of nerdome and talk about anything and everything. Enjoy!

The guys also touch on a few of things they've been up to recently and at the back half of the show dive into the "fridging" debate surrounding Deadpool 2. Moving on, they discuss the early buzz coming out of 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' following it's world premier and the latest out DC and Warner Brothers, including the possibility of Peter Jackson joining the DC fold. On the TV front it's a focus on what shows are coming back next year and which aren't as it's that time of year when renewal and cancellation announcements are made. As part of the ceremony, your hosts look back at some of the concerns worrying Hollywood about 2024 to see if any progress had been made (the answer is mostly no). When it comes to the awards themselves, as is tradition, Jeremy refused to do a list. Which really means he has the privilege of a front row seat as Julian delivers his selections. Plus enjoy an unexpected side tangent celebrating the 20th anniversary of 'Resident Evil 4' (do you feel old yet?).

SSSW - Skeleton Crew S1E8 "The Real Good Guys"

Well that's all folks! Well possibly anyway. We don't yet have official word on whether Disney and Lucasfilm will bring back 'Skeleton Crew' for another season. So as it stands, this is the story. Overall pretty great, and while we can gripe a bit about the lack of an epilogue to really tie up loose ends, on the whole this finale was satisfying. All four of the kids had an arch that felt complete and inclusion of the parents helped put a bow on that (despite Wendle largely still being an idiot). The episode had strong pacing, as none of the character centric moments felt rushed, though again, it could have maybe done with a few more minutes of run time to make sure that everyone got a fair shake. KB, for instance, got short shrift. The ending itself leaves a lot of story left to be told, and thankfully given it's placement in the timeline, even if we don't get a second season, there should be plenty of opportunity to pick up on some of the loose threads in future Star Wars projects. All in all, 'Skeleton Crew' is one of the strongest outings from Lucasfilm in awhile and it's our sincere hope that it represents a sign of what's to come from the recently maligned studio.

SSSW - Skeleton Crew S1E7 "We're Gonna Be in So Much Trouble "

Penultimate; everyone's favourite TV word. When it came to 'Game of Thrones', we became accustomed to this next-to-final episodes being a big splash, before a relatively calm finale. That tradition has carried forward into all sorts of different series but Star Wars has never been one to follow the trends. So here we are, 'Skeleton Crew' now only has one episode remaining, and the big question is, did this week's lead-up do enough work setup a satisfying conclusion. In our humble opinions, yes, but that's largely on the back of what is, standing alone, a pretty amazing 30 minutes of Star Wars fun. This episode is full of twists and unexpected turns that left us genuinely surprised. The big factor here though is of course Jod (Jude Law), who has now gone full heel, which has us concerned whether the show has the balls to commit to this turn or unwind it all in the last few moments. Either way, not knowing is part of the fun and as they proved this week there are certainly a lot of ways this show can go to stick the landing. Time will tell!
