Episode 142 - Spider-Man: Returning Home

Julian Meush October 3, 2019

After weeks of “Slow News Day” podcasts the the floodgates have finally opened and there’s almost too much too talk about. The main story of course is Spiderman’s triumphant, albeit temporary, return to the MCU; the guys discuss both the implications for the MCU as well as potential Sony Universe concepts. From there we transition to Star Wars with news that Kevin Feige may be bringing his Marvel experience to Disney’s other cinematic universe, also, the Obi-Wan series has found a director and J.J. Abrams opinion on Emperor Palapatine’s inclusion in the Episode IX. All this plus some crazy trailers and a couple “Agree or Disagree” segments.. feels good to have a real show again.

Episode 141 - A Return to Middle Earth

Julian Meush September 19, 2019

On this week’s Tower of Babble Podcast the guys ask the timeless question; are there too many trailers when you go to the theatre? That’s right, it’s ANOTHER slow week, but there’s still a few fun stories. Not the least of which being the impressions of the Jurassic World short film, “Battle at Big Rock”. Plus, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series announces it will be filming in New Zealand, and James Gunn reveals the full cast of The Suicide Squad. Finally, Julian and Jeremy review Titans S2E2!

ToB Games - More Smash Characters

Julian Meush September 15, 2019

It seems that the ToB Crew only get time to talk games when Nintendo has an announcement. What a nice confidence! In a surprise Direct, Nintendo announced that SNES games were headed to Nintendo Online (Launching with some heavy hitters like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid, just to name a few), Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury joins the Smash roster (complete with an awesome pixel art intro!), and most importantly, that even though there is only 1 character left to reveal in the “fighters pack”, that even more characters would be joining the Smash roster after that!

Episode 140 - Young...ish Elrond?

Julian Meush September 12, 2019

Another slow news week means that once again, the critical darling, “Joker” leads off the show. “Joker” took home the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival and made it’s North American debut at TIFF, so you know there was some news bits to follow up on. Besides that, came the surprising news that a Jurassic World short film is dropping next week, and that an actor who looks suspiciously like Elrond was cast in Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings” series. Plus, Julian and Jeremy review the first episode of the new season of “Titans”. All that and… not that much else to be honest, on this week’s Tower of Babble Podcast.

Episode 139 - Smile for the Camera

Julian Meush September 4, 2019

While first impressions of the Joker movie sound promising, the jury is still out on the Gotham City story that will follow it. The guys discuss both the critical success Joker has seen so far, and a recent interview with Robert Pattinson detailing his role in the upcoming Matt Reeves Batman film. Some recent remarks from J.J. Abrams spark debate over episode IX and how it will be affected by what came before it. In trailers we have: The King; a period piece emphasizing practical effects and historical accuracy, and Primal; an stylized, prehistoric cartoon with no regard for historical accuracy and a focus on primal violence.

Episode 138 - D23 2019

Julian Meush August 29, 2019

The news train just never stops. Coming off the heels of last week’s Spider-Man bombshell is Disney’s annual D23 Expo that brought with it even more Marvel news, plus a lot more! From a dark version of Rey in the Star Wars Episode IX footage (never mind the incredible The Mandalorian trailer) to the deluge of new shows coming to Disney+ just from Marvel alone, there was a lot to discuss as Julian, Dan, and Jeremy got together to break down the biggest stories out of the Disney convention and the rest of the entertainment world this week.

ToB Interlude - The Boys

Julian Meush August 24, 2019

It seems as though you can’t throw a rock without hitting a streaming service these days. If you’re Amazon Prime, it’s quickly becoming a crowded market, never mind the difficulties in keeping up with the likes of Netflix, and with Disney+ arriving this fall, things will only get tougher. Amazon may already have an Oscar under their belt, but to separate themselves from the pack they needed something big. What’s the big dog in entertainment these days you ask? Superheros of course. So in comes “The Boys”, a show based on a comic book mini-series, that oozes style and plays off the superhero genre in a refreshing, if somewhat graphic, way to great effect. Julian and Dan discuss how the critically acclaimed Amazon Prime series is able to walk the line between satire and drama, explore it’s roots in DC archetypes, and then dive deep into each of the main story threads. Beware of spoilers!

Episode 137 - Spider-Man: Homeless

Julian Meush August 21, 2019

What. A. Day! It’s not often this much jaw dropping news hits all at once. Even more rare, is having a podcast scheduled to record that same day. Luckily all those stars aligned for Julian, Dan, and Jeremy to get behind the misc and discuss the breaking news. The most pressing of which being a dispute between Disney and Sony that has Spider-Man hanging in the balance. Early reports were suggesting that Spider-Man was on his way out of the MCU as the two giant movie studios couldn’t come to terms on a new co-financing deal. If that wasn’t enough, mere moments later, Warner Brothers announced that they were bringing the gang back together for a new Matrix sequel that would include the return of Keanu Reaves and Carrie-Anne Moss, with Lana Wachowski directing! Plus, there’s news about a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi series at Disney+ and a new title for Bond 25. All that, and so much more on this weeks Tower of Babble Podcast!

ToB Interlude - Batman: Hush

Julian Meush July 31, 2019

The guys sit down to discuss the latest in DC’s Animated Movie Universe; Batman:Hush. Another in a long list of adaptations Batman:Hush is based on the iconic 2003 run of the same name, written by Jeph Loeb with art by Jim Lee. Batman has, arguably, the greatest rogues gallery in comic books, and it can be nearly impossible to introduce interesting villains to the pantheon, yet this story succeeds in creating one of the more memorable contemporary Batman villains (while still including many of the classics). This is a pure detective story and, while the art cannot possibly be fully translated from the page, the mystery components are in full effect; so the guys were only able to spend a brief period avoiding the story elements. Strongly recommend reading the comics, watching the movie, or, ideally, both before listening.

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 9 & 10 / Season Finale
May 6, 2026

There it is, folks - the season finale to the latest creation from Lucasfilm Animation. It was certainly gorgeous to look at, with the new painterly stylings, and there was no shortage of thrilling action to sink your teeth into, nor did they skimp on the stakes. But while the season started off on a welcomed unfamiliar foot, by the end of this season, and certainly in these final two episodes, the hallmarks of what we've come to know from Star Wars animation showed their head. Early on, the admitted inspirations from films such as 'Heat' and 'The Dark Knight', provided a needed grit to a show which was ostensibly following a villain. This provided the show with a fresh personality - distinguishing itself from it's predecessors in animation. Unfortunately, the creatives couldn't seem to maintain that tone, as by this two-part season finale the old tropes and predictable beats of 'Clone Wars' rose into prominence. And while the appearance of a certain fan favourite character adds some very cool action, the unoriginality from a narrative perspective robbed the final moments of the needed pathos and drama required to land the plane in the most satisfying of ways.

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 7 & 8
April 30, 2026

There's two of them now?! With the arrival of another Inquisitor things really start to escalate on Janyx. We see Maul at his lowest since probably his spider-leg days (he goes on a self-guided therapy session/vision quest that results in something quite inspiring actually!), providing us a deeper understanding of his motivations, beyond simply "revenge!". Meanwhile, Devon continues to be the most interesting character on the show as she takes two steps forward, one step back, flirting with the dark side (though bonus points for the slick ride she acquires for their getaway). On the action side, the show continues to bring the goods, with dynamic, large scale battles (heavy on LAATs which is always a treat), intimate lightsaber combat, and a special shout out to the speeder chase this week that included a new Star Wars techno track (get outta here Niamos!), which combined for a chef's kiss of a sequence. The finale is next week, dropping on Star Wars Day (May the 4th), so stay tuned to see how much the show wants to tie up and how much it wants to leave dangling ahead of season 2!

Episode 205 - CinemaCon 2026 + News Roundup
April 25, 2026

It's been a minute since Matt and Julian sat down to cover the latest in film and TV news. Some might say it's been dearly missed. Well wait no more folks because this week it's all news and nothing but the news so help me god! If the last few weeks (months?) of stories weren't enough, CinemaCon 2026 also just concluded which had it's own news deluge. The guys unpack it all (well most of it anyway)! Of utmost priority is the news of Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler's reboot of 'Miami Vice', which is close to Matt's heart. Plus 'Spaceballs 2' gets a title and release date, trailers for 'Dune 3', 'Clayface' and 'Street Fighter' all surprise (in a good way), and a new 'Lord of the Rings' movie is announced (and you won't guess who's writing it!). Plus, a 'Game of Thrones' movie, more 'Transformers' and is 'Avatar' over? All this and so much more on this week's Tower of Babble Podcast!

April 23, 2026
SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 5 & 6
April 23, 2026

We’ve reached the halfway point of the season and with it comes a tonal shift back to the roots of Star Wars animation - 'The Clone Wars'. With the arrival of the Empire, the focus shifts away from Maul and his dealings and toward the pair of Jedi as they are now in the crosshairs. The noire tone takes a back seat, next to Maul, as things become more pulpy, mixed with an impending doom that is reminiscent of the final season of 'The Clone Wars'. The set-piece action sequences get an injection of scale and danger, which is exciting, and some of the early seeding of characters like Rylee start to pay off. While maybe a bit different from the previous 4 episodes, the quality and the stakes remain high (well... for every character except Maul I suppose). Join Julian and Rachel as the unpack it all in excruciating detail.
