Episode 95 - Everyone's Favourite Goldblum

It's just Julian and Daniel this week on the program as Jeremy is "away". But the show must go on, so to kick things off Julian takes us through his picks for this year's "summer movie wager" and rips Regal Theatres for some questionable business practices. The guys then dive deep into the latest geek news, starting with a couple notable trailers for Marvel's Defenders and The Dark Tower. Moving on, Fox announces 3 new X-Men movies for 2018, Kevin Feige talks about "Phase 4" of the MCU, the Avatar sequels get new release dates (again) and Jeff Goldblum joins the Jurassic World sequel. On the TV front we got our first tease of Marvel's Inhumans and, DC and WB announce a new "DC focused" streaming service that will feature Young Justice season 3 and a new Teen Titans live action series. Over with games, Call of Duty: WWII got a trailer, Nintendo revealed some impressive sales numbers and Injustice 2 continues its march towards launch. To wrap things up the guys shower praise all over the premier of American Gods on Starz, the latest show from Brian Fuller based on the work of Neil Gaiman. Following our big Star Wars Extravaganza the ToB Crew return with another numbered episode discussing all the NON-Star Wars related news. Starting with the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, which gave us our first taste of what looks to be a delightful space adventure, despite the dower name. The guys then give their impressions on Josh Brolin being cast as Cable in Deadpool 2 as well as a whole pile of other casting news. After a little video game talk, that included Nintendo Switch sales numbers and a new Call of Duty announcement, Julian, Daniel and Jeremy round out the show with a review of Fast and Furious 8 and the latest DC animated film, Teen Titans: Judas Contract. Its been awhile since everyone has sat down and really drilled into the latest in geek news. But with Julian now settled (somewhat) back onto the island, the ToB Crew can return to their old routine. Starting with a whole pile of stories and rumours coming from WB about seemingly every one of their upcoming superhero projects. The Oscars also released their list of nominees for the upcoming ceremony so of course the big categories are discussed. On the TV side, news comes out that the Coen brothers will be trying their hand at the small screen for the first time and that Fox has ordered another X-Men series with Brian Singer attached. Over with video games, the guys talk about some rumours about the next Batman game as well as the future of Marvel in the games space now that they've inked a deal with Square Enix. Finally, the big Nintendo Switch conference was only a short time ago so every detail from price to the launch game lineup are covered.

With a whole pile of video game news to discuss the ToB Crew returns ready to talk all about the news that came out of The Video Game Awards 2016 and Playstation Experience in Anaheim. Not the least of which being the surprise announcement of The Last of Us: Part Two. But before getting to any of that the guys break down the new Transformers 5: The Last Knight and The Mummy trailers as well as discuss Jimmy Kimmel's promotion from Emmy host to Oscar host and some Rogue One tidbits before moving on to some TV talk. Which included: CW's big Arrow, Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow crossover, Netflix introducing offline viewing for select titles and a Sons of Anarchy spinoff. Finally, beyond all the major gaming announcements, Julian, Daniel and Jeremy also dissect the rumour that suggests Gamecube games will be coming to the Nintendo Switch Virtual Console and debate which games should make the list. Episode 75 - Suicide Squad

Dan is off on ANOTHER wedding so it's just Julian and Jeremy this week as we review DC’s latest blockbuster; Suicide Squad. Writer/director David Ayer helms this “Dirty Dozen” take on the DCEU which has been completely lambasted by critics since its premiere. But it's not all bad news as the movie managed to rake in a ton of cash at the box office over its opening weekend. Since the rest of the film press seems to have already covered what's wrong with the movie (which, given, there is plenty), we try and concentrate on its few positive qualities. But before we get to any of that, we cover the week's geek news and briefly touch on Geoff Johns’ promotion at DC, The Rocketeer sequel, the new CW Superman, more Nintendo NX rumours and so much more!

ToB Interlude - Car-cast

Its a ToB bonus episode! Julian and Dan were driving out to a wedding and figured why waste a perfectly good conversation? So out came the microphone as the guys briefly reviewed Matt Damon's latest, Jason Bourne, discuss Schindler's List decades after its initial release then began a trip down memory lane. The announcement of the NES Classic has brought the nostalgia of that era to the forefront as we look at where Nintendo has come from. While at the same time we look forward to where they're going as some significant rumours about the Nintendo NX have come to light.

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 3 & 4

Now that the premiere is out of the way, the team at Lucasfilm Animation can focus on driving the story forward with authority. The pacing is much improved this week as time feel more evenly dispersed across the characters. There's a greater concentration on characters who can wield a lightsaber and it's appreciated. No shade to the crime syndicate storyline, but we've kind of seen all that already (it was quite literally a 'Clone Wars' arc). The action remains strong while taking another step forward with lightsaber duels joining the mix. Plus, the fast cutting from last week seems to have been dialed back, which is appreciated as it provides more clarity in action scenes. For example, Devon's engagements with Maul are gripping, and with the additional time provided to Master Daki, the stakes feel ratcheted up. Kevin Kinner's music remains a highlight, the illusions to the Anakin vs Obi-Wan Mustafar theme was a particular highlight. In general, there is still room for more character growth, especially with characters not named Maul, who really can't/won't change - but happy to proven wrong! This show feels like it's in full swing already, which is good because next week things look to be really heating up as we hit the half way mark. Julian and Rachel unpack it all!

SSSW - Maul: Shadow Lord - Chapter 1 & 2

It's been some time since we've been able to sink our pointy teeth into a meaty Star Wars animated project. Since the finale of 'The Bad Batch' all the way back in May of 2024, all we've had to tie us over were anthology installments of varying quality. Praise the Force, that wait is finally over with the release of 'Maul: Shadow Lord', the latest full length series from Lucasfilm Animation. The series marks another technical leap forward for the animation studio, taking their patented visual style and adding another layer of detail and artistry that jumps off the screen. The story follows the titular, Maul shortly after the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, he's looking for revenge and the series wastes no time dropping us right into the thick of things (3 car/speeder chases in 40 mins is impressive). And while we know much of Maul's criminal dealings (and most of the rest of his life actually), the introduction of a new Padawan into the mix, another apprentice-to-be for Maul, adds a layer of intrigue to an otherwise underworld focused story. Join Julian and Rachel as they unpack Chapter 1: "The Dark Revenge" and Chapter 2: "Sinister Schemes", in intricate detail.

Bonus Episode - ToB Film Club - Slap Shot (1977) - Review + Commentary Track

In honour of Matt strapping on the goalie pads again for the first time in many years (and not completely pulling his groin), it only made sense to revisit the classic hockey comedy, 'Slap Shot' from 1977. This isn't the first time seeing the movie for either Julian or Matt but it's been a long time so there are plenty of questions still to answer. Here's a few examples: How well shot are the hockey scenes? Does the movie feature more or less actual hockey than 'Heated Revelry'? Does the plot and/or humour hold up all these years later? All these questions are answered in time, but we're also trying something new this month. Instead of a traditional movie review, Julian and Matt decided to go a layer deeper and add a full commentary track for the movie as well. While the show itself had few surprises (there was a tie though so that's something!), between Conan's bits, the winners, and the losers, there is plenty to discuss. Congrats to 'One Battle After Another', PTA and all the winners ('Sinners' probably deserved a better fate, but respect to MBJ for his ascension)!
